Literacy at West Derby

Literacy is key to helping our students achieve their goals, develop their knowledge and realise their potential. Having good literacy skills allows our students to express their thoughts, feelings and ideas both face to face and in writing. At West Derby School, literacy is a part of everything we do. Through form time activities, lessons, competitions, interventions and home school links we strive to ensure that our students leave West Derby School as confident readers and writers.

At West Derby School we are passionate about reading and recognise the importance that reading has on a child’s success. Studies show that reading for pleasure is one of the biggest factors in improving children’s educational performance. Therefore, we read regularly in lesson, at the library and across the curriculum with our pupils.

Library Visits

We are privileged to have our own in-house English Department library and Liverpool City Council library on-site. Which enables our students to benefit from regular library visits each week as the school has full occupancy of the space on a Thursday.During Year 7, we ensure all students are enrolled into Liverpool City Council library and each student receives a full induction into the library. The experience is enjoyed by all students and helps develop an enthusiasm for books and reading.

Handwriting is an essential skill. Research suggests that handwriting activates the brain more then using a keyboard because it involves more complex motor and cognitive skills. Additionally, standardised assessments are often based on written work, particularly in time-limited written examinations. Without fast, legible handwriting, students will miss out on learning opportunities and possibly under-achieve. At West Derby School, we support and provide intervention for students who struggle to write legibly and at speed.

Spelling Bee

West Derby School run an annual Spelling Bee to identify who has the best spelling skills in Years 7,8 and 9. Students who enter the competition are asked to spell words of increasing difficulty. The student who is able to spell the most words accurately is named as the ‘Spelling Bee Champion’.
