Gyanodaya School, Okhaldhunga
"Namaste Jude and Erica
Two days ago I visited Gyanodaya School, and thought you may be interested in an update on how your fundraising efforts are making a difference there!
As you may recall, most of the primary school (years 2-5) were previously taught in classrooms that were no better than cow sheds. I'm delighted to be able to tell you that this is no longer the case!
Four new classrooms are almost completed, and already in use. Two of these rooms just need painting, while two others require plaster and paint. The government gave some funding for these rooms, and the community contributed labour, but it's unlikely they would have been completed without the fundraising (pre-earthquake) that everyone at West Derby has done.
The money you raised as part of our earthquake appeal is being spent on an additional classroom / library. Construction for this is well underway and I was able to authorize Manisha UK to send payment for the second stage of work. They're hoping to complete the work by the end of next month (in time for the new school year in Nepal, which starts in April).
I can't overstate the difference these classrooms make. Teaching and learning was almost impossible in the old classrooms, with high levels of noise from other classes, dirty surroundings, wind and rain blowing in and little safety. None of this is true of the new rooms, thanks to your efforts. On behalf of everyone at Gyanodaya, and Manisha UK, I would like to say a very heartfelt 'thank you' for the tremendous difference you have made to so many young lives"
